Overview

This is a set of twenty blank keycaps for mechanical keyboards, made of PBT plastic in the XDA profile at the standard 1U size. They carry no printed legends, which gives a keyboard the clean, minimalist look popular in the custom keyboard hobby, and they come in four finishes: white, black, transparent and transparent black. They fit the cross-shaped stem used by Cherry MX, Gateron, Kailh and virtually all other MX-style switches.

Two terms define the product. PBT is the more durable of the two common keycap plastics: it resists the shine that ABS caps develop with wear, and the dye treatment keeps its colour from fading. XDA is a uniform profile, meaning every key has the same height and a flat, rounded-square top; it sits taller than DSA and lower than SA-family profiles, and because all caps are identical they can be placed on any row.

What 1U Blanks Are Used For

A 1U cap is the standard single-key width, the size of the letters, numbers and most modifiers. Builders use small blank sets like this in several ways: as accent keys to add a colour highlight to arrows, escape or WASD; to replace worn or shined caps on an existing board; to cap macro pads and small custom layouts; and, spread across a board with more sets, to build the fully blank look favoured by minimalists and touch typists. Because XDA is uniform, these caps sit correctly anywhere on the keyboard. The transparent options also pass some light on backlit boards for a soft glow.

Fit and Compatibility

Compatibility is simple: any switch with the MX cross stem accepts these caps, which covers the vast majority of mechanical keyboards and kits. They are 1U only, so wider keys such as shift, enter and the space bar are not covered by this set. Mixing profiles is worth a thought: XDA caps next to a sculpted profile such as OEM or Cherry will sit at a different height, which is fine for deliberate accents but noticeable across a full row, so the cleanest results come from using them as accents or on a uniform-profile board.

Fitting and Care

Installation needs no tools: pull the old cap (a keycap puller avoids scratches), align the cross stem and press the new cap on firmly. PBT needs no special care beyond an occasional wipe or a wash when deep cleaning the board. The keycaps are the only thing in the package; the keyboard and switches are not included.
